On June 3rd, the Cedar Creek Sportsmen Club along with KY Fish and Wildlife, hosted a Free Fish day activity at the Cedar Creek Lake. We had about 40 people in attendance. We started the day off at the Club building at 9am and KY F&W Officer Rick Muse handed out fishing poles and tackle to all of the kids in attendance that was donated by the KY Conservation Officers and by Danville Wal-Mart. We then went to the Lake to fish. There were prizes given out for accomplishments such as biggest crappie, biggest bass, most fish caught, etc. We then had hotdogs, chips and cookies prepared by members of the Sportsmen Club. The 2006 Boy Scouts of America Heritage and Lake Cumberland Districts Spring Camporee was just held at the Cedar Creek Sportsman Club property May 19th - 21st. Click the following link to view pictures from the event: 2006BSA
The weekend turned out great! I had several Boy Scout leaders comment to me about how nice the club facilities and property were. I had some comment to me that this was the best district camporee they had ever attended and one of those, I know, has been involved with scouting for many, many years. We had over 200 people in attendance including scouts and leaders.
The activities included:
1) Skills Hike --This included a 1.2 mile hike and they had to complete 3 skills stations including fire starting without matches, knot tying, and pitching a tent and breaking it back down before they could cross the finish line.
2) Skeet Shooting --Scouts had to be 13 years old and have their hunter safety card or shotgun merit badge to participate. Each scout shot 5 times and then had a chance to shoot a second round of 5 shots after everyone had gone through. Julian ran this station and did a great job! He was excellent about explaining everything and emphasizing safety to the scouts!
3) Rifle Shooting --All scouts were eligible to participate in this event and it ran simultaneous with skeet shooting. Many that shot skeet then went down and participated in the rifle shoot.
4) Canoeing --While scouts were participating in the shooting events, we allowed free time for those waiting to canoe in the Dix River.
5) Competitive Events --In the
afternoon, we had competitive events where scouts broke out into
patrols of 5 to 7 boys and competed for awards.
** Canoeing -- Each patrol chose two boys to race a course on
Dix River for the best overall time.
** Tomahawk Throwing -- Each patrol competed with hitting the
target.
** Wilderness Survival -- Each patrol was responsible for taking
any items they could find in their environment to build a
survival shelter.
** Orienteering -- A compass course was laid out (using the 3-d
archery targets) that the patrols had to find based on a list of
coordinates.
** Search and Rescue -- Each patrol was tested on search and
rescue skills. We had an actual search and rescue team on site
to run this activity complete with search dogs.
6) Fishing Derby --We took the scouts over to Cedar Creek Lake to participate in a fishing derby to compete as individuals for the biggest fish.
7) Dutch Oven Cook-off --The Troops competed on the best Dutch oven desert. This is a large cast iron pot with a lid that one can bake cobblers, among other things, with an open fire and coals.
8) Camporee Campfire --This is an organized campfire where the scouts do short skits and/or songs and then we announce the winners of the competitions and hand out awards.
Thank you all for your help and support. I really enjoy being part of the CCSC and am proud of what we can do in our community!
